The Acoustic Profile of a Curtain System: From Motor Decibels to Track Dampening

Silence is a feature. We dissect the acoustic profile of a smart curtain system, analyzing sources of noise from motor harmonics to glider impact and the engineering solutions for their mitigation.

The perceived silence of a premium curtain system is the result of targeted noise mitigation across multiple components. The overall acoustic profile is a sum of parts, each requiring a specific engineering solution.

1. Motor Noise (Airborne & Structure-Borne):
As discussed, a BLDC motor is inherently quieter. However, high-frequency switching noise from the motor controller and vibrations transmitted through the mounting brackets can still be audible. Solutions include potting the motor controller in a resin to dampen component vibration and using rubber isolation gaskets between the motor housing and the track to decouple structure-borne vibration.

2. Glider-Track Interaction (Impact Noise):
This is the sound of plastic gliders impacting the end stops and each other. Premium systems address this with:

  • Elastomer End Stops: Replacing hard plastic with soft, rubberized buffers.

  • Magnetic Dampening: Using magnets at the ends of the track to create a repulsive force that gently decelerates the gliders before they reach the physical stop.

  • Optimized Glider Design: Using materials like Polyoxymethylene (POM/Delrin), which has a low coefficient of friction and high impact resistance, and designing gliders with internal spring dampers.

3. Track Resonance:
A long aluminum track can act like a tuning fork, amplifying and transmitting vibrations. Applying a self-adhesive bituminous damping sheet to the back of the track adds mass and constraining layers, changing the resonant frequency and reducing its ability to radiate sound.

We don't just specify a decibel level; we engineer the entire acoustic experience. Our systems undergo NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) analysis to identify and mitigate every source of unwanted sound. Request the NVH test report for our flagship model to see the data for yourself.
